Bag of Rice Project #38 -A visit to the Otuonye family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Otuonye family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Barb Bryson this is the 38th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

On this visit we met Mrs Penina Otuonye, a widow who lives with 4 of her grand kids. They live in an uncompleted building which they have made livable. Mrs Penina has 5 kids who all live far away and they struggle to survive and as she is a farmer they survive and eat only what they can grow.

Since it is harvesting season, the Otuonyes were frying Garri, a delicacy that is among Nigeria’s main foods and passes through many process and the last one is the frying which makes it dry and eatable. We met Mrs Penina’s grand kids frying the Garri and they were so happy working because they know thats what they will eat.

The Otonyes were happy when they saw us visit and even happier when they saw what we brought for them. Mrs Penina was ecstatic that we brought “help” as she described the bag of rice as help and were so happy to be of assistance and help this wonderful woman. Her kids were barefooted, poorly clothed but the gift was well received and they were so grateful.
