. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Luke family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Thayn Family, this is the 385th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this special family in a village called Umuola outside Aba, Abia state. They were recommended to us by their ward bishop, to see if we can assist them. The Luke’s lived in a rather small bungalow, in just one room with no plumbing or electricity. The windows were made out of wood and iron protectors. We were welcomed by Mrs Victoria Luke who is a widow and has 3 children but lives with one. Mrs Victoria is a farmer, she has a little vegetable farm around her area. She harvest them and sell them out in the local market. I marvel at the strength Mrs Victoria has to take care of her children ever since her husband passed away.

Here is their cooking space located inside their room due to the fact that there is no space to place some of their tools. So their kitchen equipment are usually kept inside the bedroom. They cook with the kerosene stove although they have a gas cooker but due to the high price of cooking gas they could not afford it and were left to manage the stove or sometimes firewood. It must be very uneasy for Mrs Victoria having to struggle without her husband. We got to take a look at their latrine area. This place is worse than a privy area, it is located in the bush. It is constructed out of large palm leaves and bamboo sticks. One can say it is highly unhygienic, unsanitary and are exposed to harmful substances that are detrimental to one’s health.

We were very pleased to meet the Mrs Luke. She was not expecting us and was rather surprised by our visit. They were very grateful for the bag of rice and thanked those who donated it to them. It was a wonderful experience getting to meet this family and even more worth to see and feel their happy spirits.
