. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Ibanga family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Consuelo Medero and Michelle Kowallis this is the 386th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village called Ikom Ima in Akwa Ibom state. We randomly stopped to see them after I noticed some kids playing outside of the house. When we walked up to them, we were introduced to the head of the family Mr Ibanga and his beautiful family. The Ibangas have 7 kids and they live in a one bedroom mudhouse. It’s been a long while since this village last saw electricity and they fetch their water from a nearby stream which is running dry because it’s the dry season and the rains are gone.

The Ibangas cook just at the back of their house with dried palm fonds and a tripod stand. This is not ideal but it is the least they could afford. Mr Ibanga is a farmer and him and his family all pitch in to use some space at the back of their home to grow cassava. Which they sell or eat depending on how big the harvest is. Farming is back breaking work with little profit but the harvest does allow them something to put in their constantly hungry stomach.

Kitchen little one with his distended tummy due to lack of proper nutrition.

The Ibangas were not expecting us and were very surprised to see us. How happy they were to receive an unexpected gift is hard to express but the whole family were besides themselves in excitement. A full bag of rice is not something they could ever afford. On the rare occasion they can afford rice it is purchased by the cup full. They thanked the donors who have made them this happy especially in this holiday season and wished them blessings in return.
