Bag of Rice Project #396 -A visit to the Oku family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign
. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Oku family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lindsey Watkins Family this is the 386th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this amazing family in Uyo, Akwa ibom state. We were welcomed by Mrs Stella Oku and her three lovely children. The live in a small bungalow house with other neighbors and everybody shares the utilities. They welcomed us to stay in their front yard. Mrs Stella is a widow, her husband died few year ago. Mrs Stella is faced with a medical condition known as stroke, she cannot walk properly despite this she is still able to take care of her children in his absence.

To take care of her family, Mrs Stella boys farm and she sells her farm products in order to feed her family. She is assisted by her sons and neighbor and that is how they have survived so far, but their life is full of struggles and often go without basic needs. Mrs Stella cooks with firewood by the backyard of their house. This is the cheapest means of fuel one can find in Nigeria.

The Oku family was a special family for one to visit during this period. Since Mrs Oku had a partial stroke she has not been able to work since and has been relying on people’s aids . She was very surprised end marveled that we just randomly visited her with this gift and repeatedly mentioned how grateful she was for the gift given to her family. She was very happy to receive this gift and thanked those who donated it.
