Bag of Rice Project #40 -A visit to the Sunday family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Sunday family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Melissa Coy and Ashley Ecker Family this is the 40th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village outside Aba, Abia state. They are a wonderful family who was recommended to us by their church leader. They live in a rented bungalow that is not quite completed. Mrs Georgina is a widow with 9 kids. She is a trader who sells stockfish in a nearby local market. Her income is not enough to feed her family and it is difficult for them to get by.

We did not meet all of Mrs Sunday’s kids at home, because most of them have traveled to learn skills in the city. Two of her kids were working on their kitchen which is made out of mud and old zinc material which they were trying to find a way to make into a make shift kitchen. We also met Ukah and Ugo the two kids in the picture above. They were initially shy but thye later got comfortable with us.

When we met the Sundays and told them why we came, they were very delighted and we could see that they really needed the food. The kids were ashy and Mrs Sunday had gone to market to buy food for the kids and they needed rice to cook it. So she was so happy that we came at the right time to help them and we felt happy having been guided to them at the right time.
