Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Eden family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Betsy Lenick this is the 417th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
The Edens are neighbors to the Etim family and we met them first but could not communicate effectively due to the language barrier. Her husband came back while we were still around and could speak English and I could then explain who we were and why we visited them. The Edens have 4 kids and live in a one room apartment with no other space for any amenity. They were very happy to meet us and could not hide their excitement since they already saw us visit the Etim family.
The Edens cook using firewood just in front of their home mainly because they do not have space and also for rainy season so that they can have some protection for when it rains. This style of cooking is the cheapest they can afford and they certainly do not mind the black smoke that comes from using it. Mr Eden is a tailor and his wife is unemployed and even though it is school season all their kids were at home because they could not afford their school fees.
The Edens were delighted to meet us. They had almost missed out because of communication barriers and were happy that they got a second chance to meet us again. They were extremely grateful for the bag of Rice and thanked those who donated it to their family. The disbelief and look of gratitude in their faces was very visible and it was very clear that this bag of Rice will impact their lives more than we might even know.
