Bag of Rice Project #427 -A visit to the Elijah family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Elijah family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Woodruff Family this is the 427th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Elijahs are next door neighbors to the Imoh family and also came over to ask if they could get a bag of Rice too. We spoke to them and got to know their family. The Elijahs have 1 kid and they live in a one bedroom apartment with a lot of other tenants. These families that live here share virtually everything and have little to no secrets. It was wonderful meeting them as they were very eager to answer our enquires. We don’t give just anyone food, we need to see they are in fact in need and working to better their lives.

It was raining heavily when we met this family so we ended up spending some time with them so the weather can let up. The Elijahs share a kitchen with the Imohs and the two families found a way to divide it and share the space. They use a small gas stove as well and were even in the process of making a local meal when we arrived. Mr Elijah drives a tricycle and uses it commercially to make money while his wife stays at home to take care of their kid. Driving on Nigerian roads is a dangerous job with little to no profit, but with the lack of jobs people will take any opportunity they can.

The Elijahs watched as we spoke to the Imohs and were very happy that we also came to visit their family. Rice is expensive in Nigeria for something so valuable to every family in Nigeria so, they were ecstatic to receive a bag and thanked those who donated to their family. They prayed outload for those who made this donation possible. They were very grateful as they did not expect it and even as we spent time with them they kept talking about how lucky they were to even be around to see us. I guess the rain that kept them home was very useful to them, God always leads us to those he knows need it the most.
