Bag of Rice Project #429 -A visit to the Ugbe family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Ugbe family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Emily McCormick and The Freeman Family this is the 429th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Greens recommended this next family to us and we did not have to go far to meet them. We did not meet their parents at home but with Mrs Greens help we were able to get their details. The Ugbes have 4 kids and were off to work when we arrived to visit their family. They were both traders and were at their shop at a local market. The Ugbes live in a one bedroom apartment and miraculously had light even tho it was raining. That’s a rarity in Nigeria, there is never light when it rains.

The Ugbes have a kitchen and use a small blue gas cylinder in cooking. From their kids we learned that they had gone to market and their parents sell used clothes at the market. This is a hard way to make any profit, but in Nigeria one is willing to do just about anything to provide a daily meal. Then start over again the next day, to try and earn enough for another meal. We were happy to meet this family full with intelligent and wonderful children. They were very responsive and their parents should be proud of them for conducting themselves well in their absence.

Mrs Green promised to speak with the parents on our behalf when they returned and we left them our contact. They called me later in the evening as they could not believe what they saw when they came back and wanted to confirm. They were very thankful and quite full with joy as this was a huge surprise to them. They were grateful to those who donated to their family and prayed that God will bless them for their generosity. To come home from work and find a full bag, something they could not afford with several months wages, I would have loved to see their faces!
