Bag of Rice Project #430 -A visit to the Bassey family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Bassey family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jake and Amber Given this is the 430th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

I found this family while I was visiting a friend. I saw some kids playing outside of an uncompleted house and I promised myself that I’ll visit them when next we had a delivery to make. I met Mrs Bassey when I visited, an aged widow and she lived with 2 of her grandkids and a kid she had adopted from their neighborhood. She was so surprised to see us and this lasted throughout our visit. They live in a one room not quite completed apartment. From what their neighbors told me, Mrs Bassey’s kids abandoned her including the mother to the two kids she was staying with. They haven’t seen anybody take care of her for years. Others might of abandoned her, but she still does her best to take care of the children showing her kindness.

Mrs Bassey showed me a small place at the back of their home where she cooks. She uses firewood because it is the cheapest fuel that she can afford. To the best of my knowledge, she is unemployed because of her health and neighbors regularly pitch in to help her in anyway they can.

Mrs Bassey was in shock due to her reluctance in believing that we just visited her family to give her a bag of Rice. She kept asking if it was hers or she had to do anything else which was a little heartbreaking. This meant a lot to her and she kept praying for us as we were leaving as she could not quite believe it. I’m glad that I insisted in taking the long trip to visit this family as it was well worth the trip. We felt like we really made a difference and I know that this bag of Rice will mean a lot to this family. We felt warm and happy on our way back and it reminded us of the reason we began this project.
