Bag of Rice Project #431 -A visit to the Edet family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Edet family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Adriana Resende this is the 431st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We came across this wonderful family in a village outside Uyo, at Itu local government Akwa ibom state. They were recommended to us by some neighbors when they saw us in the area. We were welcomed by Mr Bassey Okon Edet who happens to be an Elder who owns a small business in the village and his wife Mrs Margret who bore him six children. Mrs Margret is unemployed and most of their children are not housing with them due to the poor condition of their household. Mr Okon was alone as of the time we came. The Okon family live in a rather small apartment with no water and power supply. Since they lack access to water supply the children walk long distance each day with water jug and gallons to fetch water and fill their large bucket.

The Okon family cook outside their household in a small space at the backyard surrounded with Zinc material. The area where they stay is very interior but meeting them made up for it. This is the space they usually use to prepare some meals for the house. Mr Okon used to have a small grocery store but closed it down due to lack of funds.

Mr Okon was very happy to see us and we’re also happy to have an encounter with him. He was grateful to the people that donated this package and said it would go a long way in feeding his family and also helping his small business. Mr Okon was quite a religious man and was really surprised  because he thought the package was sent from the church. He gave thanks to God for the event that took place and wished us safer journey back home.
