Bag of Rice Project #439 -A visit to the Edem family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Edem family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lynn Whittaker and an anonymous donor this is the 439th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We came across the family in a village called Ifa in Akwaibom State, Nigeria. They live in an incomplete building with no doors or windows. We were informed that this area have been facing difficulties and problems of electricity power supply for the past 5 years. The condition of this place drew our attention to this family. We were welcomed by Mr Nathaniel Emem Edem, his wife Mrs Uduak and their six lovely kids. We exchanged conversations and they were pleased to show us around the area.

Here is their little kitchen space of which they share with other members of the compound. They use firewood to cook as it is the cheapest means of preparing food in this area. With little or no equipment, Mrs Uduak still manages to prepare meals for the household and is usually assisted by her children. Mr Nathaniel is a Vulcanizer (people who fill up tires) by the road side of the village. He works really hard to provide for his family and put food in their table because the wife on the other hand is currently unemployed with no source of income. Their kids are all little and so they can’t fend for themselves rather looking up to their parents to survive.

We were as glad to meet this family as they were to meet us. The Edems could not believe their eyes and were profusely thankful for the gift which their family received and they extended their sincere thanks to those who made this miracle to their family. They were shocked and did not expect it at all. I am sure that this bag of Rice will be very essential to this family and serve them for the crucial months ahead.
