Bag of Rice Project #440 -A visit to the Edet family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Edet family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lynn Palmer this is the 440th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We happened to met this lovely family at a village called Ifa in Akwaibom State, Nigeria. They live as tenants in a one bedroom apartment in an incomplete building. This area had not had electricity for a long while and fetch their water from a nearby stream due to the lack of tap water in the area. We were welcomed with lovely smiles and warm faces by Mr Nnamonso Edet his wife Mrs Imebong and their five lovely children. We informed them of the purpose of our visit and they were in extra need of assistance.

Mr Edet is the breadwinner of the household. He is a keke(local tricycle) driver and earns very little amount to cater for his family needs. The Keke he drives is rented so at the end of the day he gives a remits a certain percentage to the owner of the keke. Mrs Imebong is currently unemployed so she is mostly at home doing house chores. She prepares most of her meals with the firewood at the backyard of their home. This is the only means of cooking one can afford here. The cooking space is general to other members of the compound. For a family of five children there should be enough provisions for the house but due to their condition they can’t afford the basic needs for sustainability.

The Edets were so excited to meet us. They had seen us around their neighborhood and hoped we would come to visit them. Mrs Edet on behalf of her husband and family, thanked us for the Bag of Rice which she described as a miracle especially with the way the economy is. She expressed her gratitude to those who donated this to their family and prayed that God will bless them immensely.
