Bag of Rice Project #451 -A visit to the Edem family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Edem family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Donna Harrs this is the 451st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Edem family is a close neighbour of the Monday Family. We met them in Afaha village, Akwa Ibom State. We went to the Edem family when the heavy rain stopped. We were received by Mr Otobong Godwin Edem and when we told him what we have for him, Mr Edem ‘s family were unable to contain the joy. Mr Edem lives in a one bedroom apartment with his four kids.

The Edem family created a space at the back of their house for cooking. The Edem family cooks with firewood because that is the cheapest fuel they can afford at the moment considering the cost of a gas cylinder in the country. Mr Edem is a sand supplier, he engages in this to feed the family. Mrs Esther Edem sells periwinkle to support the husband so that they can be able to cater for the family and train the children they have in school.

The Edems were happy when we gave them the bag of rice and the children of Mr Edem danced round the compound. The family thanked the donor for giving them a bag of rice in these difficult times and how tough the economy is. They prayed God will always be there for the donor and supply their needs. They didn’t believe someone could give a bag of rice to them this period without any strings attached.
