Bag of Rice Project #453 -A visit to the Effiong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Effiong family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS this is the 453rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a Ibesikpo, a small village on the outskirts of Uyo, Nigeria. They were referred to us by their village chief who identified and recommended this family to us. The Effiongs have 5 kids and they live in a shared 3 bedroom apartment with 3 other families all sharing the same space and utilities. We met Mr Effiong who was at home taking care of kids while his wife went to the market.

The Effiongs do not have access to a kitchen so they constructed a mini shed outside their house to use as a kitchen. They use firewood to cook because it is the cheapest that they can afford. Mr Effiong is a laborer, a term for people who work in construction sites. They carry cement blocks and aid in any way they can. His wife sells vegetables at the local market to add to the families income and they both find a way to take care of the family.

The Effiongs were delighted to meet us. They could not believe their eyes when we told them that we will give them a bag of Rice. They had to ask again just before we left if they could carry it. A bag of Rice in Nigeria cost more than the monthly minimum wage and families are beyond grateful to receive one. The Effiongs prayed to God to bless those that donated this bag to their family and extended their warm regards.
