Bag of Rice Project #461 -A visit to the Utuk family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Utuk family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Collette Gordon this is the 461st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Utuk family are neighbors to the Ekereobong family. They live in Nkemba Street, which is in Uyo Local Government Area. They live in a one room apartment without basic amenities like running water or electricity. They are blessed with 8 kids. We met them outside their home.

The Utuk family created a kitchen space in their home to cook, they told us the kitchen has been destroyed by flood that the floor of the kitchen was just drying because rain has not fallen for three days now. They showed us how the flood has destroyed their home and they have no property left in their house, all their chairs, television and other amenities in the house have been destroyed, they are only left with a few of their clothes. They cook with firewood because that is the cheapest they can afford. Mrs Mary Tom Utuk is a trader, she sells in a local market to feed the family. The husband is unemployed and was not around at the time of our visit.

They didn’t believe their eyes when we told them what we brought for them. They never believed someone could donate a bad of rice to them without any strings attached. They thanked the donor and prayed that God will bless them and his light will continually shine upon them.
