Bag of Rice Project #465 -A visit to the Usen family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Usen family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Megan Wells, and this is the 464th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Usen family in a village just outside Uyo, Nigeria. We drove past their area and stopped to speak to the kids playing outside their house. Eventually, the families staying in the compound all chose to share the bag, which was also the last available. Mainly because they did not believe that we would come back, with that in mind, the Usens live in a three room apartment with other families and they all share the same utilities.

The Usens do not have space for a kitchen and use an open space behind their house to cook. They use firewood to cook because it is cheapest means of cooking. Mrs Usen fries Akara, a local bean delicacy every morning and uses the income generated from their to take care of her children. She lost her husband some years ago and has been taking care of her kids alone ever since.

So we meant to only visit and gift one family but the rest of the families in the compound all decided to share the available rice. It was fun discussing and talking to everybody and they were very grateful for the bag of Rice. Even a cup of Rice is very expensive and the families were extremly grateful for this bag of Rice. A bag of Rice is now more expensive the monthly minimum wage in the country so everyone in Nigeria values and appreciates a bag of Rice.
