Bag of Rice Project #471 -A visit to the Emmanuel family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Emmanuel family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Linda Honsvick, Cristine Codr and The Barrand Family this is the 471st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this beautiful family in the city of Eket which is domiciled in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The family stays in a one-room apartment which is built with mud. The family gave us a warm reception when they saw us. When we arrived at the Comfort Emmanuel compound they had five kids and three grandchildren. Mrs comfort is a widow and she stays with her daughter in her husband’s house. When we told them what we had for them, the children in the compound shouted for joy and were happy they will eat rice after how many months of not tasting rice.

The family erected a structure at the back of their house which served as their kitchen. The family is unable to afford cooking gas due to the increase in the price of the gas and how the economy of Nigeria, they make use of firewood to cook which is the cheapest they can afford, and it’s harmful to their health due to the smoke that emits from the wood but they are left with no choice than to cook with it. Mrs. Comfort Emmanuel told us they are farmers and they do that to fend for the children, though some of the children are not in school due to a lack of money to fund their education.

Kitchen

The Emmanuel Family were in happy mode and they danced around the compound the children in the compound were drawn to tears and all they could do was shed tears of joy and pray for the donor for helping them in this hard time also said God will remember them when they call on him, they continued praying until we left.
