Bag of Rice Project #475 -A visit to the Kufre family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Kufre family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 475th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this lovely family in Eket, a village in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. This is one of the biggest villages in Akwa Ibom state. A friend directed us to the family. Mr. Kufre lost his job in the city and the family had to relocate to the village. The village gave them land to build a small house and start again. They stay in a house built with cement blocks but not yet completed. The Kufres have three kids. When we told them what we have for them, they were surprised and happy because getting a bag of rice right now in Nigeria is so expensive and people are unable to afford it because of the price.

The family cooks in an open space and they make use of firewood to cook because that’s the cheapest they could afford. They can’t buy a small gas cooker because of the amount it costs now. Using firewood to cook is harmful to the health but they are left with no other choice because they can’t get a cooker. Mr. Kufre is unemployed and he said he has been searching for jobs and he can’t find one. In spite of everything we had fun with the Kufres, and we met them while they were cooking and took turns helping them out.

Mr. Kufre was happy to see us and excited about the gift we brought for them and they thanked the donor for donating a bag of rice to them because it is hard to come by considering the price of a bag of rice. They said God will bless the donor and replenish their pocket. When we left the family was full of thanks and waved at us as we left.
