Bag of Rice Project #476 -A visit to the Bassey family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The following story is about the Bassey family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lynn Palmer, and this is the 476th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in Eket, a village in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief who also helped with guides to locate the families. We met the Bassey family and they live in an uncompleted one-bedroom house, surrounded by bushes and trees. Mrs. Bassey is a widow and she has 7 kids. She was not at home when we visited but we met some of her children at home to receive us.

The Bassey cook their meals behind their house. They use the popular and cheap tripod and firewood method and cook under a small shed. Their village chief recommended this family to us because they have been struggling to survive since the demise of their breadwinner. It has been tough and most of the Bassey children have had to live with other families in other to help their siblings to survive. Mrs. Bassey is a trader and sells fruits in the local market. What she makes daily can barely take care of her kids.

The Basseys were delighted to see us. We had to explain who we were so that they could tell their mom later. They were very happy to receive a bag of Rice ahead of the Christmas celebration. A bag of rice is very cherished in Nigeria and families here appreciate it because it will last them for months. An unexpected gift most can not afford. The Basseys thanked those who made it possible for them to have a bag of rice for this festive season and prayed that God will richly reward them.
