Bag of Rice Project #477 -A visit to the Enyewan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Enyewan family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Watkins Family, and this is the 477th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Enyewan family in Eket, a village in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. They were referred to us by their village chief who also helped us to locate the family. The Enyewan family lives in a two-bedroom mud hut with a roof made with palm fronds. The Enyewans have 5 kids and struggling with eking out a living to support all of them. The village chief has been doing all he can to help them out and we were delighted to meet them.

The Enyewan family does not have space in their home for a kitchen so they use a space at the back of their house as a kitchen. They use the metal tripod and firewood method because it is the cheapest that they could afford. The Enyewans are farmers for hire. They work on people’s farms and get paid based on the work they do. It is back breaking, hard work with very little in return but it helps them to take care of the family. You can see from the children’s tummies, that hunger is a common visitor this this family.

The Enyewans were not expecting us and were even more surprised by what we brought for them. They were very delighted to receive their bag of Rice and couldn’t stop thanking us and thanking God for blessing them. They appreciated the bag of rice which would feed them for a while and would be very beneficial to them. They thanked those who donated the bag of Rice to them and kept talking about it even as we were leaving.
