Bag of Rice Project #479 -A visit to the Jacob family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Jacob family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Watkins Family, this is the 479th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Jacob family all seated at the front of their house. When we drove in they were surprised. The Jacob family resides in Eket, a village in Akwa Ibom State. It was Christmas Eve, and they were surprised to see us because they were not expecting any visitors. The Jacobs have seven children and live in a one-room apartment. When we told them what we had for them, they were shocked and overjoyed because they had seen Christmas rice, they had nothing to cook, and they were worried about how Christmas would be with 7 kids remaining hungry and angry while others celebrated.

The Jacobs family created a space at the back of their house that served as their kitchen. They are unable to afford cooking gas and have to resort to using firewood, which is the cheapest fuel they can get. When we visited, the husband was not at home, and the wife, Mrs. Jacob said she sells fufu and the husband is unemployed. She sells fufu so as to be able to take care of the family.

The family was happy that someone who does not know them will donate a full bag of rice which is higher than the minimum wage in the country at the moment, they prayed for the donor and were happy they got Christmas rice when all hope was lost. They were full of joy until we left, and they continued praying for the donor.
