Bag of Rice Project #486 -A visit to the Okon family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Emmanuel family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Watkins Family, and this is the 486th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Okon Family was recommended to us by a friend when we visited them, they were outside their house. We met the Okon family in Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. The Okon family lives in a one-bedroom apartment built with cement and blocks but still under construction. The family is blessed with five kids. When we told them what we have for them, they told us in Ibibio ‘daka’ which means leave, they told us we are coming to play a prank on them. When they saw what we brought for them they didn’t believe their eyes and they apologized for the statement they made earlier.

The family cooks at the back of their house and they cook with firewood which is the cheapest means of cooking they can afford.  When we visited the husband was not around, but we were told he is a farmer and the wife Emem sells firewood to fend for the family.

The family was happy and they have gotten what they will eat and cook for the children to go to school. The children told us they are tired of taking one meal over and over because the last time they tasted rice was during the new year. They thanked the donor and prayed God will continually bless and protect them. The family danced and prayed until we left.
