Bag of Rice Project #49 -A visit to the Edet family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Edet family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Stacie Toombs, Susan Hickerson, Mary Ellen McLaughlin this is the 49th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family is dear to my heart and was a personal pick by me. I had this family in mind since the beginning of this program and they worship in the same ward I do while I’m in school. They lost one of their 4 kids sometime in the middle of last year and the diagnosis was acute malnutrition. I always felt that they needed the bag of rice and looked forward to when I was back in school when I could deliver a bag of Rice to them. Then on a Sunday while we were making some deliveries in Aba I received a call and someone told me that this same family has lost another family member. I was heartbroken.

The Edet family is a lovely family with two kids. They live in a rented one bedroom apartment. Mr Edet is a vulcanizer and owns a machine that pumps air into tires. With the recent deaths of his two kids, he has found his capital wiped off and he lost his shop when his rent expired. The family has been finding it really hard to eat and clothe their kids and I immediately thought of them as a family to visit when this project started.

This family has gone through so much loss and grief and it was a privilege for me to participate in putting a smile on their face. They were so grateful for the help and I could see that they did not have much to eat and they expressed gratitude for the special love, concern and help shown to them. I especially want to thank the person that donated for this particular bag of rice because they saved a life.
