Bag of Rice Project #493 -A visit to the Uwed family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Uwed family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Watkins Family, and this is the 493rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Uwed family stays in Nung Oku, one of the villages in Ibesikpo Asutan, Uyo. We walked into their compound and their children attracted us to the family. We saw the mother seated outside, she received us and called on her husband that they have a visitor. When we told them what we have for them, they were shocked and didn’t believe their eyes. They asked which political party sent us, because it’s barely three weeks to the general elections in Nigeria, and political parties use this strategy to woo people to vote for them. When we told them someone donated it to them, they said ” it is a lie” because they haven’t seen such before. The Uwed family is blessed with five kids and they live in a one-bedroom apartment.

The Uwed family cooks at the back of their house and they make use of firewood which is the cheapest fuel they can afford. The Uwed family shares the same toilet and bathroom with their neighbors. Mr Uwed is a laborer, he helps with carrying sand and blocks when they are building a house, he uses this to feed the family. The wife Mrs. Uduak is unemployed and has an interest in hairdressing but there is no money for her to learn the trade.

When we delivered the Uwed family their sack of rice, they were overjoyed. They told us that they had prayed that morning for a miracle from God because they had never before encountered this kind of impromptu miracle. They prayed for the donor, saying that God would bless their labors as they thought of them and that He would be there for them when they needed him. The children prayed and thanked the benefactor because they have obtained what they will eat. They kept on praying even after we left.
