Bag of Rice Project #50 -A visit to the David family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the David family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Nicole Wright this is the 50th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this special family in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. Surprisingly unlike every other family we have visited we met the father of the home at home and we did not meet his wife and children. He was studying scriptures when we met him. Mr David is a Liberian who served a mission in Nigeria and decided to stay behind and marry a wife here and settle here. He married an Ibibio woman from the south of Nigeria and they have 5 kids. They live in a rented one room apartment and share facilities such as bathroom and toilet with other tenants.

The reason why we did not meet Mrs David or the kids is that Mrs David went to the market to purchase food items and the kids went to school. The Davids run a mobile cooking shop, they cook at home and then the wife pushes the food around in a truck. She is also a tailor which showed the amazing woman she is with all her skills and talent which were are tailored to help her family. Things has not been easy for the family as sales has not been kind to them. They hope to bounce back and that was right were we came in.

After hearing why we came to visit him, Mr David was very grateful for the gift we brought for him. He exclaimed that this was the first time that people has sought to help him since he came to Nigeria. We were so happy for the impact the bag of Rice made and not for the first time since we started this project so a grown man completely lost for words to express how he felt. We hope those who donated understand that their donation is important and that the family has been helped and touched.
