Bag of Rice Project #501 -A visit to the Bassey family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Bassey family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lisa Marlow, and this is the 501st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Bassey family in Effoi, a village in Eket. When we got into the compound we did not see anyone, but when we knocked they came out. The family was recommended by a friend. We did not meet the mother in the house, they told us she went out. The two sons were surprised when we told them what we brought for them. They were excited and did not believe their eyes. The Bassey family has four kids and they live in a one-bedroom apartment. The house is built with mud which can collapse at any point in time.

The Bassey family cooks with firewood and they are unable to afford cooking gas. Their kitchen is in an open space at the back of their house Mr and Mrs Bassey are both farmers and they use this to take care of the family.

We met two of Mrs. Bassey’s sons at home when we visited. They were excited and they prayed for the donor that God lord will continually bless them and bless the work of their hands. We left the Bassey family and they were excited. As we left, the family that recommended the Bassey family saw the mother of the children, we told her what we brought for her. She was with her friend and all she could do was dance on the road and thank the donor. She prayed in Ibibio dialect saying God will bless the donor and God’s light will continue to shine on them. She danced and danced until we left.
