Bag of Rice Project #502 -A visit to the Udotim family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Udotim family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 502nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Udotim family in Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The family stay in Effoi village in Eket Local Government Area. When we met the family they gave us a warm welcome. The family has 6 kids. When we told them what we have for them they told us to stop the expensive joke that no one can just give someone a bag of rice without any strings attached. When they saw it, they now believed it was not a joke, they didn’t believe their eyes. The Udotim family stays in a mud house that is on the verge of collapsing. They said they usually defecate in the bush since they don’t have a toilet and built a small place they use as a bathroom.

The Udotim family cooks in an open space at the back of their house and they make use of firewood for cooking since that is the cheapest fuel they can afford. Mrs Udotim is a petty trader, she engages in this to feed the family since her husband died long ago she has been the sole provider for the family.

The Udotim family was excited that they had gotten something to eat. They never believed such miracles still happen. They thanked the donor and said God will bless them and keep the eyes of the enemy off them, they prayed that God will bless the work of their hands and open doors of blessing to them. The family waved at us as we drove off.
