Bag of Rice Project #505 -A visit to the Macanson family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Macanson family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 505th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

Our acquaintance gave us the Macanson family’s contact information. The family was gathered outside of their home when we first saw them. The Macanson family resides in Effoi Village, which is located in Akwa Ibom State in southern Nigeria. As we entered, the family was taken aback and welcomed us with open arms. They admitted to being shocked to see us because they hadn’t expected any visitors.  When we told them what brought us there, they did not believe their eyes because giving a bag of rice is equivalent to the monthly minimum wage in the country, and many people don’t even earn up to the minimum wage in the country. The four children of the Macanson family reside in a one-room flat that is in danger of collapsing. They have a leaky roof and have trouble sleeping at night whenever it rains.

The Macanson family cooks at the rear of their home since the kitchen they built was wrecked by rain and they don’t have a dedicated space. To cook, the family makes use of firewood. Mr. Macanson works as a security guard at a nearby school. He does this to support his wife, who is now unemployed, and their children. She claimed she wants to pursue a career in tailoring but is unable to do so because she lacks the funds

The Macanson family was delighted and overjoyed since the bag of rice will go a long way toward feeding the family’s undernourished youngsters. They expressed their gratitude to the donor and hoped that God would continue to bless them and provide them with opportunities. The family kept praying and waving as we drove away. The family’s demeanor transformed into one of joy.
