Bag of Rice Project #507 -A visit to the Dickson family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Dickson family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 507th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Dickson family in Effoi, a village in Akwa Ibom State which is in the southern part of Nigeria. When we got to the compound the children watched us as we drove in and one of them went to call their father. The father of the children gave us a warm reception and was surprised we are in his compound. When we told him the purpose of our visit, the man was happy and the children beamed a smile. The family lives in a one-bedroom apartment which is made with mud and the house is on the verge of collapsing, they lack basic amenities, they go to the stream to fetch their water and some people go there to defecate. They don’t have access to electricity and they said they have been living in darkness for over 10 years. The family is blessed with 2 kids.

The Dickson family cooks at the back of their house and they make use of firewood to cook. They are unable to buy cooking gas which will aid them to cook fast. Mr. Dickson is a plumber and he uses this to take care of his children, though they have dropped out of school because of lack of funds.

The family was happy that someone who didn’t know them could donate a bag of rice for them. They commanded heaven’s blessings on the donor and prayed that God will continue to protect, guide and provide for them in times of their need. The family was happy and excited as we left. They waved at us as we left their compound.
