Bag of Rice Project #51 -A visit to the George family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the George family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Tracy Ace, Jane Bowers, Ashley Stegall, Prasha Mathur this is the 51st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The next family we visited was the George family. They live in Uyo, a city in Nigeria and we got referred to them by a local leader. We met Mr George in front of the house cutting down a tree in front of their compound and he led us into his house in his work clothes. The Georges are a wonderful family, they have two kids but we only met one at home.

The George family live in a rented one room apartment and they cook right in front of their door as they have no separate place to cook their meals. Mr George has plumbing skills but has found work hard to come by, his wife Mrs Mary is a trader and sells palm oil and periwinkle in the nearby market. This lack of income has pushed the family to extreme lengths of begging food from other people to survive.

In the first picture above you see Mr George son drinking the most basic Nigerian food which is cassava flakes and water. People usually resort to this food when you have absolutely nothing else and that was supposed to be his breakfast. The George family were really struggling and Mr George described our visit as a miracle. They were over joyous and repeatedly expressed their thanks. I can’t remember the last time I saw someone drinking Garri let alone as a meal and I know this donation will improve and better the lives of the George family for months to come.
