Bag of Rice Project #511 -A visit to the Sunday family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Sunday family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Maryellen Raymond, and this is the 511th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Sunday family was recommended to us by a friend. The family resides in Effoi village in Akwa Ibom State, the southern part of Nigeria. When we went into the compound it looked as If nobody was living there, because the building looks like an abandoned building. When we knocked they came out. The family lives in a one-room apartment and it’s made with mud, which is on the verge of collapsing. Part of the house has already fallen off and anytime rain falls inside of the house is always affected. The family is blessed with 3 kids but when we visited we saw one and he was walking with crutches, we were told he had an accident. When we told them what we have for them the family was happy and Mrs. Sunday was happy because she has been the one feeding the children since the father died.

They told us they don’t have a particular spot they cook because their kitchen which was built with mud collapsed and they cook anywhere. They made a temporary cooking spot just behind their house. They told us they make use of firewood for cooking and Mrs. Sunday said she’s a farmer and she does that to take care of the family.

Mrs Sunday and his son thanked the donor and prayed that God will bless the works of their hand and won’t put them to shame. The family was grateful and their mood changed from what we met them with earlier, they were happy that they had something to eat. They waved and prayed as we left.
