Bag of Rice Project #516 -A visit to the Robinson family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Robinson family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Thayn Family, and this is the 516th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Robinson family in Ekpene Obo in the Southern part of Nigeria. The family was introduced to us by a friend. When we got to the Robinson family, they were seated outside their house. The road to get to the Robinson’s house cannot be accessible by vehicle, so we had to trek and carry the bag of rice before we get to the Robinson’s compound. The family gave us a warm welcome and we told them what brought us to their compound, they kept on asking if it was given by the government because of the swearing-in of the governor going on. We told them it was given to them by a donor, they were happy and the children danced around the compound. The Robinson family lives in an abandoned area, vehicles can’t access the area and there is no light, the family goes to the stream to fetch water because they can’t access a borehole. The house the family stays is a mud house which is not good considering the fact that it can collapse at any point in time and also the family is blessed with 2 wonderful kids.

The Robinson family cooks at the back of their house and they make use of firewood they are unable to afford cooking gas, they said they go into the bush and pick firewood so that they can be able to cook. The price of cooking gas is a no-go area for them because they can’t afford it. When we asked her of what she and her husband do to fend for the family, she told us the husband is dead and she is a farmer, she does this to fend for the two children.

The Robinson family was happy and they thanked the donor for remembering them in times of their need, they said God will remember the donor anytime the donor calls on God. The family continued praying for the donor until we left
