Bag of Rice Project #518 -A visit to the Ime family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Ime family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to James and Nancy Aydelotte Family, and this is the 518th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Ime family in Ekpene Obo a village located in the Southern part of Nigeria. The family was recommended to us by the Solomon family. When we got to the compound we only saw the children we asked about their parents and they went to call their mother for us. When we told her our reason for visiting she was excited and the children were happy. She asked if the bag of rice was given by a government official, we told her it was given to her by a donor and she was surprised someone who doesn’t know her is giving her a bag of rice. She was happy and the children were excited. The Ime family lives in a mud house, they are unable to build a house with blocks considering the amount it requires to build. The Ime family is blessed with 7 kids, we were told the children are out of school due to lack of money.

The Ime family is unable to afford a cooking gas and they make use of firewood for cooking, considering the amount a cooking gas goes for. Using firewood to cook has a greater effect on the health of the people because they are inhaling smoke into their bodies.  When we asked her what she and her husband does for a living she said her husband died 3 years ago and she has been the one taking care of the family, what she does is farm for other people so that she can be able to get food for the family to eat.

The family was excited and they were happy they have gotten something to eat, it has been hard for them to get what to eat. They prayed for the donor for remembering them In such a critical time and said all they do God will always show up for them. They smiled and waved at us as we left.
