Bag of Rice Project #525 -A visit to the Ndifreke family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Ndifreke family. This is the 525th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We were given the Ndifreke family’s contact information by an acquaintance. When we first encountered the family, they were gathered in front of their house. The Ndifreke family resides in Ikot Ibritam Village in the southern Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom. The family was shocked when we walked in and gave us a warm welcome. The family admitted that they were shocked to see us because they were not expecting any visitors. We told them our reason for visiting, and the family was shocked considering the hardship they are going through in the country and how government policies are not favoring them, considering the increase in PMS, which had led to an increase in the price of goods in the country. The family is blessed with 2 kids, when we visited, they were not around We were told they were in church. The family lives in a mud house that is on the verge of collapsing, and they told us they haven’t had light in years.

The Ndifreke family cooks at the rear of their home since the kitchen they built was wrecked by rain and they don’t have a dedicated space for it. To cook, the family makes use of firewood. Mr. Macanson works as a bicycle repairer. He does this to support his wife, who is now unemployed, and their children. He said his wife wants to pursue a career in tailoring but is unable to do so because he lacks the funds to sponsor her.

The sack of rice will go a long way towards feeding the family’s undernourished children, thus the Ndifreke family was thrilled and ecstatic. We only met Mr Ndifreke at home because his wife and kids went to a church and could not return in time to meet us. They said thanks to the donor and prayed that God would keep blessing them and provide them with opportunities. As we departed, Mr. Ndifreke waved and continued to pray. The family’s mood changed to one of happiness.
