Bag of Rice Project #527 -A visit to the Lucky family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Lucky family. This is the 527th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the lucky family in Ikot Ibritam, a village located in Akwa Ibom State. When we got to the compound, we met them outside their compound. They gave us a warm welcome, and when we told them what made us come to their family, they were happy and did not believe their eyes. They asked which politician is sponsoring the project, and we had to tell them it is not sponsored by any politician; someone donated it to them. They were happy and couldn’t believe their eyes. The family is blessed with two kids, we were told they are out of school because they can’t afford the school fees. The family lives in a one-bedroom apartment, that is built with mud and on the verge of collapsing. We were told they share the same bathroom and toilet with their neighbors and have been unable to pay their electricity bill because they are unable to feed themselves.

The lucky family cooks at the back of their house, they are unable to afford cooking gas because of the exorbitant amount it costs. The lucky family opted for the cheapest fuel they could afford, which was cooking with firewood. They told us they could easily fetch firewood by going into the forest and getting it. Mrs. Lucky said her husband is dead, she is a widow, and she is a farmer. She does this to fend for the family.

The family was grateful that someone who didn’t even know them by name could give them a bag of rice. They asked God to continue to guard, lead, and provide for them in their times of need, and they commanded the heavens to bless the giver. As we departed, the family was joyful and enthusiastic. They waved as we passed by their property.
