Bag of Rice Project #528 -A visit to the Monday family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Monday family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, this is the 528th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Monday family in Ikot Ibritam, a village domiciled in Akwa Ibom, located in the southern part of Nigeria. When we got to the compound, we met the children in front of the house. Their mother was in the backyard, so they went to call her. She gave us a warm welcome when she met us, and we told her why we were in her compound. She did not believe her eyes, she never believed someone could donate a bag of rice to her, which is higher than the minimum wage for a month in the country. The Monday family is blessed with four kids, and they live in a one-bedroom apartment that is built with mud and lacks the basic amenities a house should have. They said they haven’t had light in their house for about 10 years, and the children are out of school because they can not pay.

The Monday family uses firewood to cook in the backyard of their home since it is the least expensive option when compared to the outrageous cost of cooking gas. They can’t afford to buy cooking gas. Mrs. Monday is a widow, and she is a farmer and uses that to feed her children.

The donor made the family happy. Mr. Thompson’s family thanked the donor for brightening their day. They hoped that God would continue to take care of the donor and raise them to great heights while also showering them with his compassion and grace each and every day of their lives. The family was joyful and grinned as we departed.
