Bag of Rice Project #530 -A visit to the John family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the John family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Kaili Falwell, this is the 530th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We heard about the Sunday family from a friend. The family is located in the hamlet of Ikot Ibritam in the southern Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom. When we entered the compound, it appeared as though no one lived there because the structure appeared to be abandoned. They emerged when we knocked. The family resides in a mud-built, one-room flat that is in danger of collapsing. The inside of the home is always impacted by rain, and a portion of the house has already fallen off. The family has three children, and the wife was affected by the part of the house that fell. They lack basic amenities in the house; we were told they bathe as early as 5 a.m. because they take their bath outside their house and that they don’t have a bathroom. They haven’t seen light in the compound since they started living there. When we told them what we had brought for them, they were excited and thanked God that they had something to eat. They asked if it was given by a politician, and we had to tell them it was donated to them by someone they never believed who they didn’t know could give them a free bag of rice, which is higher than the monthly minimum wage in the country.

We inquired about their typical cooking location. They explained to us that since their mud-built kitchen collapsed, they no longer have a specific location where they cook. Instead, they cook wherever it is available. They admitted to using firewood for cooking. They are unable to afford cooking gas due to the price in the market. Mr. John says he collects sand from the river and sells it, while his wife sells salt at the nearby market.

Mr. John is taking care of his aged mother. She insisted on joining the picture for their new bag of rice even though she can barely walk to show appreciation. The John family expressed their gratitude to the giver and hoped that God would bless their labors and keep them from being embarrassed. The family was appreciative and in a different frame of mind than when we first met them; they were content that they had food to eat. As we drove away, they waved and prayed.
