Bag of Rice Project #532 -A visit to the Udeme family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Udeme family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 532nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Udeme family was recommended to us by a friend, and when we got to the compound, we met her with her children sitting outside. She gave us a warm welcome. We told her what we had for her, she didn’t believe her eyes and told us we were joking until we brought the bag of rice out. She was so excited. She asked which politician was giving her a bag of rice. We told her someone donated it to her, and she was shocked that someone she did not know would donate a bag of rice to her. She told us how she was abused by her husband. The husband was beating her at any slight provocation, and she was chased out of the house by the husband. She is now staying at her father’s house with her three kids, and they are all out of school due to lack of funds. They live in a mud house that is on the verge of collapsing.

Despite the health risks associated with burning firewood to cook, the family is forced to do so since it is the cheapest fuel they can afford. Mrs. Udeme is unemployed, and she is unable to fend for her children. They don’t have access to clean water, they don’t have basic household facilities, and they urinate outdoors.

The youngsters were grinning, and the family seemed content. They said it had been a while since they had had any rice. They expressed their gratitude to the donor and hoped that God would provide them with blessings and aid them whenever they needed it. As we departed, the family grinned and seemed content.
