Bag of Rice Project #531 -A visit to the Inyang family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Inyang family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lisa Marlow Teton technical services, and this is the 531st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

In the hamlet of Ikot Ibritam, located in Nigeria’s southern Akwa Ibom State, we first encountered the Ini family. The kids were playing outside the home compound when we arrived. When we told them what we had brought for them, they were delighted and couldn’t believe their eyes. The father welcomed us with open arms. This lovely family resides in a mud hut. The house’s roof is in poor condition and is about to collapse. The family has six children, two of whom have dropped out of school, and the remaining four are still enrolled.

The family uses firewood to cook, and they do it in the backyard of their home. The cheapest cooking method, using cooking gas, is out of their price range. The wife, Mrs Happiness, is unemployed, according to Mr. Inyang , who also claimed that he collects sand from the river to support the family. However, the husband said that she had expressed an interest in learning the trade of hairdressing but that they were unable to pay for the trade.

The family was delighted and thanked the donor for providing them with a sack of rice, which was way more than the country’s minimum salary. They prayed for the donor and proclaimed that all the donor did would be prosperous and that God would bless the donor. The family waved and grinned as we drove away from them.
