Bag of Rice Project #534 -A visit to the Ruben family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Ruben family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to James and Nancy Aydelotte Family, and this is the 534th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Reuben family resides in Ikot Ibritam, a village domiciled in Akwa Ibom State in the southern part of Nigeria.  The family was waiting outside their home when we arrived, and they welcomed us with open arms. The family resides in a one-room apartment that is built with mud. When we told the family what we had for them, they were excited. The family is blessed with two children, and we were told the children are out of school due to lack of funds to send them.

The Reuben family cooks at the back of their house, and they make use of firewood to cook. They are unable to afford a gas cooker considering the amount a is gas sold at the market. Mr. Reuben said he is a fisherman, and he does this to fend for the family. Mrs. Reuben is unemployed, and she has a flair for tailoring, but she doesn’t have the money to enroll in it yet.

While the family was singing and dancing, they began to pray for the donor and prayed that God should bless their labor of love. A bag of rice costs more than the minimum pay in Nigeria, and they even make less than the minimum wage, so they could not believe what they were seeing. They thanked the donor for supporting them during these trying times.
