Bag of Rice Project #537 -A visit to the Edet family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Edet family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 537th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

In the Akwa Ibom State community of Itam, we got to know the fortunate family. We greeted them outside their compound as we arrived at the compound. They welcomed us with open arms, and when we explained why we had come to be part of their family, they were ecstatic and could not believe what they saw. They inquired as to which politician was funding the initiative, and we had to respond that it was donated to them rather than supported by any politicians. They couldn’t believe what they saw, and they were delighted. The family is fortunate to have two children, but we were informed that they do not attend school since they cannot pay the tuition. The family’s one-bedroom, which was constructed out of block and not well plastered, is about to collapse. We were informed that they are unable to feed themselves; therefore, they share a toilet and bathroom with their neighbors and are unable to pay their power bill.

The family cooks with cooking gas, and they do this inside their house. Mr. Edet was not in when we visited, but the wife was, and she told us she does make up for a living while the husband drives a bike. They engage in this to cater for the family.

The family thanked the benefactor and prayed to God to protect them from embarrassment and to bless their labors. When we initially met the family, they were unhappy because they didn’t have any food, but they were also grateful. They waved and prayed as we left.
