Bag of Rice Project #539 -A visit to the Ubong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Ubong family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Maryellen Raymond and Jennifer Croston, this is the 539th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Ubong family are close neighbors to the Edet family. Mr. Edet was outside his house when we visited him, and he was shocked that we came to his house. We told him the purpose of our visit, and he did not believe his eyes. He also asked if it was the government that was funding it. We told him it was given to him by a donor, and he was shocked that someone could just gift him a bag of rice without knowing him. The Ubong family is blessed with 3 kids, and they live in a house constructed with a block. They are unable to pay their electricity bill and share a bathroom and toilet with their neighbors.

The Ubong family makes use of cooking gas to cook, and though the cooking gas is in a bad state, they told us they are managing. Mr. Ubong told us he grinds better at the nearest market to take care of the family. The wife of Mr. Ubong is pregnant and will give birth in four months. Mrs. Ubong is unemployed, and she said she wanted to learn fashion design but couldn’t because of a paucity of funds. She told us she assisted Mr. Ubong at the market when she was not pregnant, but since she is heavy, she stays at home now.

The Ubong family was pleased to meet us and thought that politicians had sent us.  They were astounded to learn that someone who did not know them from Adam could assist them when we gave them the explanation. They prayed that God would bless them in all they do and thanked the donors for making it possible for them to get a bag of rice during this joyous time. Before we departed, the family was overjoyed and expressed their gratitude profusely.
