Bag of Rice Project #540 -A visit to the Edoma family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Edoma family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Colleen Mitsopoulos, and this is the 540th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Edoma family in Itu village, which is domiciled in Akwa Ibom State, the southern part of Nigeria. When we met the family, their husband and wife were seated outside their house, and they gave us a receptive welcome. They were shocked when we walked into their compound. We told them why we came, and they didn’t believe their eyes. They were not smiling when we entered, but, as we told them, they were shocked. They were excited, and their mood changed. Mr. Edoma jumped up from his seat and told us, “ ABEG WHO DASH ME RICE.” The reason he said this is because the amount a bag of rice costs is greater than the amount paid by the government as the monthly minimum wage. The Edoma family is blessed with three kids, and they are all enrolled in government schools. They live in a house built with blocks; the house looks old and does not have any modern facilities in it.

The Edoma family uses the old way of cooking—cooking with charcoal, which is harmful to their health. They are left with no choice but to make use of the cooking method because that is what they can afford at the moment. Mr. Edoma is a carpenter; he does this to feed the family, and the wife, Mrs. Glory Edoma, sells groundnut in the market to support the husband in taking care of the children. Although she said she would love to leave the trade and learn hairdressing, which is her passion, lack of money had not made her venture into it.

After receiving the bag of rice, the family expressed their gratitude to the donor and prayed to God to bless them and provide for them in their time of need. The family was happy about their gift. As we departed, the family grinned and said a prayer for both the donor and us.
