Bag of Rice Project #541 -A visit to the George family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the George family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to DAVID CHURCH FAMILY, and this is the 541st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

An acquaintance of ours gave us the Elisha family’s contact details. The family was assembled in front of their home when we first saw them. The Elisha family lives in the southern Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom, specifically in Ikot Itu Village. The family welcomed us with open arms after being taken aback by our arrival. The family acknowledged that they had not expected any guests and were surprised to see us. When we explained to them why we were there, the family was taken aback by the struggles they face domestically and the ways in which government policies do not benefit them in light of the rising PMS that has raised the cost of products nationwide. They were shocked that a bag of rice could be given to them without any strings attached. In todays economy many family struggle to purchase rice even a cup at a time at the market.

The family is blessed with five kids, and they are all out of school because of the current hardships going on in the country, they can not afford to send them. The amount a bag of rice costs is more than the minimum wage paid in the country. The family lives in an old structure made of blocks; they told us that whenever rain falls, the roof is always leaking.

The family cooks outside using firewood, as it’s the least expensive option available to them. The current cost of a tiny gas cooker prevents them from purchasing one. Although cooking with firewood is unhealthy, they have no other option because they cannot purchase cooking gas. Mr. Elisha sells brooms at the market to fend for the family. The wife, Mrs. Uduak, has a skin infection. When she went to the hospital to get it checked, they told her it would cost her #100,000 to treat herself. Since she does not have any money, she had to leave it that way. She is unemployed and has an interest in selling fish at the local market, but since the economy is not favorable, she does not have money to start the trade.

The family was pleased with the donor. The donor was appreciated by the Elisha family for making their day. They prayed that God would keep the donor under his care, help them achieve great things, and show them his kindness and grace every single day of their existence. The family was happy and smiling when we drove away.
