Bag of Rice Project #543 -A visit to the Dickson family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Dickson family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 543th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We were referred to the Dickson family by a friend. We met the Dickson family in Uyo village, domiciled in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. We met the daughter in front of her shop selling groundnuts. She was shocked, so we stopped in front of her shop. She took us to their house; they live in a one-room apartment, and the house is built with blocks but not yet plastered. The Dickson family is blessed with six children. When we got to their house, the mother was shocked to see us, and we told her what we had for her. She was overjoyed and started hugging everyone and saying prayers to the donors. She didn’t believe her eyes that such a thing would happen to her; she shouted that she had gotten rice from God.

Cooking was done in the backyard of their house; the family uses firewood. They cannot afford to cook using cooking gas, which is the least expensive option. Mrs. Dickson is unemployed, and she has been taken care of by her daughter, who sells groundnut. The daughter lamented that sales are not coming in as before because of the economy of the country. She said she wants to learn how to make hair, but she is unable to go for the training because she doesn’t have the money.

The family expressed their happiness and gratitude to the donor for giving them a bag of rice that was equivalent to the minimum wage in the nation. They prayed for the donor, declaring that God would reward them and that all they did would be profitable. They waved and smiled at us as we drove away.
