Bag of Rice Project #544 -A visit to the Jackson family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Jackson family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Marlow Family, and this is the 544th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Jackson family was recommended to us by a friend. We met the family in Uyo village, which is domiciled in Akwa Ibom State. The family stays in a shopping complex; they cleared one of the toilets in the complex and made it into a small room. The family is blessed with 2 children. When we met them and told them why we came to see them, the family was overjoyed, and Mr. Jackson did not know how he was feeling. He said it was a dream; he didn’t believe his eyes; he started asking about the political party we belonged to; we told them someone donated the bag of rice to them; Mr. Jackson didn’t believe it.

Cooking was done in front of where they stayed; the family made use of firewood for cooking because it was what they could afford. The price of cooking gas is expensive. Even though firewood is not best for cooking, considering the smoke it emits, which is harmful to the body, they are left with no choice but to go with that. Mr. Jackson is a security man, and he guards the complex. The wife is unemployed; she said she would love to sell clothes and bags in the market, but she does not have the money to start.

The family started to pray for the donor and asked God to bless their labour of love as they were singing and dancing. They could not believe what they were witnessing because a bag of rice costs more than the minimum salary in Nigeria, and they even make less than that amount. They expressed gratitude to the donor for helping them through these difficult times.
