Bag of Rice Project #545 -A visit to Archibong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Archibong family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Elaine Ausby, and this is the 545th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Archibong family in Afaha village, which is domiciled in the southern part of Nigeria.  The family was recommended to us by a friend. On getting to the compound, the family was shocked when our team drove into their compound. They were shocked to see us because they were not expecting any visitors. They gave us a receptive welcome and offered us a seat, which we politely declined. They asked us what the problem was; we told them we had a bag of rice for them, and they went berserk; they did not expect it. They asked us if we were sent by the government, and we told them no, that someone donated it to them. The family went frenzy, and they told us, “THIS KIND THING NEVER happened to US BEFORE, WE DEY ALWAYS HEAR AM.” The family is a large one, and they are blessed with 8 kids, but most of the children have dropped out due to a lack of funds. The family lives in a one-room apartment with the kids. The house is a mud house, and it was in vogue in the 1800s. The roof is leaking, and whenever it rains, they are affected, which is uncomfortable for them. They told us they have to wake up as early as 5:00 am to take their bath because they don’t have a bathroom, so they do that at the back of their house every morning.

The family told us that since they were born, they have not made use of gas cylinders to cook. The Archibong family uses firewood to cook, and all the children are trained in this way. Using firewood to cook is harmful to the health and reduces life expectancy. Due to how difficult it is in the country, they have no choice but to make use of firewood. Mr. Archibong and his wife are both unemployed, and they find it hard to feed the family.

The family was pleased that a stranger could give them a bag of rice without even knowing their name. They asked God to continue guarding, leading, and supplying for them in their hour of need and prayed that God would always show up for them. When we drove away, the family looked content and eager. They waved as we walked past their residence.
