Bag of Rice Project #546 -A visit to the Edet family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Edet family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 546th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Edet family was recommended to us by the Archibong family; they are their close neighbors. The Edet family stays in Afaha village in Akwa Ibom State, which is domiciled in the southern part of Nigeria. When we got to the compound, the family was shocked. We saw the children outside, and they rushed in to call their mother. When the mother saw us, she gave us a receptive welcome. We told her what brought us to her compound, and she was dumbfounded; she did not believe what she was hearing. She said in Ibibio language which is their local dialect, Ke Nsungo Mkpo Ami- in these hard times, she asked which government official sent us, and we told her that someone had donated it to her. She was in utter shock that someone she did not know could give her a bag of rice and she did not believe it. The kids were overjoyed. The Edet family is blessed with four kids, and they are all not in school because of the situation in the country. The family stays in a one-room apartment that is built with mud. The house is an old one, and the family is unable to erect a modern one.

All families definitely must have a place where they cook. In the case of the Edet family, who cook at the back of their house and lack modern cooking tools, the family makes use of firewood to cook, which is the cheapest fuel they can afford. Cooking with firewood is harmful to the health and can shorten one’s life span. The family is left with no option but to cook with it; they are unable to afford a cooking cylinder. Mr. Edet and his wife, Maria Edet, are unemployed; they find it hard to feed the family.

The bag of rice that the donor donated to Mr. Edet and her child made them delighted. They prayed for God to bless the giver and provide for their needs at whatever time they prayed to Him. The family prayed for us. They were happy they had gotten  rice and that God had visited them.
