Bag of Rice Project #549 -A visit to the Bassey family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Bassey family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS , and this is the 549th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Bassey family lives close to the Sampson family; they saw us in the Sampson family and did not expect us to come to their place. The Bassey family lives in Afaha village in Akwa Ibom, which is located in the southern part of Nigeria. When we walked into their compound, they were happy and told us they never expected us in their compound. They said they have been struggling to make ends meet, and eating has been a problem for them. They welcomed us and gave us a seat, but we told them we had other places to touch. The family is a very large one, and they are blessed with eight kids but when we visited, only one of them was in. The house is built with a block, though it still needs to be worked on because the plastering has not been done yet and they have been staying in the house for five years.

The Bassey family uses firewood to cook. Firewood is not a hygienic way of cooking; it causes harm to the body and affects their health because they have been inhaling smoke, which reduces their life span. The Bassey goes to the bush to fetch firewood and uses it for cooking. Mrs. Bassey owns a grocery store in front of their house; this is what the family relies on to feed them. Mr. Bassey is unemployed, and the wife’s business is what feeds the family, which is not enough for the family.

In addition to thanking the donor, the family prayed to God to bless their labors and keep them from people who would steal their joy. The family was thankful but also upset because they didn’t have any food when we first met them. They prayed and waved as we drove away.
