Bag of Rice Project #55 -A visit to the Duff family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Duff family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Suzanne Findlay this is the 55th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was introduced to us by their church leader. The Duff’s have 2 kids. They live in a one bedroom apartment and share other facilities with other tenants. The Duffs are a wonderful family and they received us with so much happiness. The kitchen is in their room, they created a space for it in a different corner of the house.

Mr Duff is unemployed at the moment. He is a trained mason but he has not found work in months and this has impacted on his family heavily. His wife however, is a seamstress and has a small shop where she sews clothes for people. With her little money the family manages to live by. They have a little kid who needs so much care, attention and food and my heart breaks for when they say that sometimes they just makes sure he feeds well and they have to go hungry.

Their Kitchen the large black tub on the side is for water storage.

When we met this family and told them the reason for our visit, They were overjoyed. Currently they had no foodstuff in their kitchen (as seen above) and the wife told me that they had no plans of what to eat that evening and were praying for something to happen and we happened. I was touched by the humility of this family. It seemed like at one time that they had a little bit of money but with the job issues they have fallen into hard times. They thanked us so many times and when we told them that people donated they were very grateful to them too. I was happy that we were able to make a difference to this family and we left them a lot better than we met them.
